WordFiller User Guide

About WordFillerWordFiller Version 2

WordFiller is an Educational Technology tool for use with an interactive smart board. This comprehension tool extracts designated key words from text, to create a challenging comprehension activity for students of all stages and subjects. Students must correctly move each word, or collection of words to where they rightly belong within the text. Students can then examine their accuracy by checking how many words were placed correctly. This interactive tool scales with the stages and the subjects, as the material that is used is the material YOU present.

WordFiller was made to help bridge the gap between Education and Technology. The interactive smart board is a highly effective teaching resource, but is lacking in support. WordFiller helps to fill this gap by providing an easily configurable tool for use within the classroom.

Using the Kinect

WordFiller comes complete with Speech Recognition, simply use any of the phrases below to let WordFiller know what you want to do!

  1. "WordFiller Move" - This will tell WordFiller to pickup the word the hand is currently hovering over.
  2. "WordFiller Drop" - This will tell WordFiller to drop the current word you have been moving.
  3. "WordFiller Mark" - This will tell WordFiller that you have finished placing all the words and would like to see how many you have placed correctly.
  4. "WordFiller Click" - This will simulate a normal mouse click.
  5. "WordFiller Open Menu" - This will open the WordFiller menu.
  6. "WordFiller Close Menu" - This will tell WordFiller to close the menu.

Similar drag and drop features can also be achieved by simply raising the opposite hand above your head. This signals WordFiller that it should pickup the current word below it and will hold onto it until you lower your hand again.

Work in Progress

I am currently working on a series of windows 8 applications to help teachers feel more comfortable with technology in the classroom. This also includes updating WordFiller to have Kinect functionality in order to help become a better educational technology tool.
